Helium - What about it?
Abundant Helium in The Four Corners Region (UT, CO, AZ, NM)
The Colorado Plateau of the Four Corners region is underlain by voluminous, helium-source rocks that are over 1.6 billion years old. The source rocks are blanketed by thousand’s of feet of sedimentary rocks deposited over the last 480 million years with numerous reservoir-opportunities for economic helium accumulation. Four Corners Helium is committed to finding and developing economically-viable helium reservoirs in one of the most prospective regions on earth for helium exploration.
What we look for.
Terrestrial helium forms in source-rocks by the radioactivity of elements like uranium and thorium. In contrast to its earthly-generation by radiogenesis, helium is arguably the most harmless, unreactive element on the periodic table; in fact, inhaling mixtures of helium and oxygen is routine in medicine and underwater SCUBA diving applications (e.g. Anthonisen et al., 1971; Gluck et al., 1990). Helium-oxygen mixtures are also being tested on patients for treatment of Covid-19 symptoms (Ma et al., 2020).
Helium Is Born!
In the right conditions helium-forming alpha particles can actually be seen forming visible contrails as they are emitted from a radioactive sample. This video shows the phenomenon in a cloud chamber. (Video Source)
